Distribution, a Challenge in itself

Posted by Monique on October 17, 2010 at 11:18 PM

So, I can't find a single distribution comapany who will even give methe time of day, am I a failure? NO!!! The Tether way, Never say never, and never listen to people who say No a lot. That doesn't include your parents.

Anyway, I've been taking deep breathes and praying that this will work. First, we've gotta get this movie done, THEN find a distributor.

Right now, distribution is pretty useless if there is no movie to distribute. So, we've gotta take care of that. However, once the movie is finished, there will be an amount of time before we can get a distributor, and that can go anywhere from a few monthes to a year, so pray for us!

Wanna read the process of distribution? OKAY!!!

Its very interesting, to me. If you love movies and stuff about the wonders of movie making, read this.

First, after a movie has been made and edited (Credits added, special effects, ETC.) the movie is stuck in the computer, until, the director/producer (Me) begins to shop around for a distributor. While most didtributors don't want money up front, they are garenteed to want percentage income, and in order to put their trust upoun you, they themselves have to know the movie won't flop and will be an instant hit. While there is no for sure way to know that will happen, you've got to convince them that it will be great, having fans of the book the movie is based on will help them think "If this thing has fans already, imagine the money it will rack up!" Another thing, Movie distributors are Money vaccums, all of them. Most of them don't really care about helping, they care about money, and if helping you means money in their pocket, they are all for it.

Percentage can range anywhere from ten perecent of movie proceeds, to seventy perecent. If movie distributors have confidence the movie will be great and have theaters packed in to see the movie at every time, they will put the lowest percentage they can, it still means money in their pocket, but it also means a lot for them, and a lot for you as well. If they just aren't sure, they will go a little higher to ensure they still get money from their investment, And if they are postive the movie will flop, they either won't spend their time and money, or they will demand and least seventy percent, which will be really bad for you if the movie makes Mill.

Another thing, movies MUST make over 6 mill their opening week, or else its considered a flop. This isn't counting how much a theater sells tickets for.

Distribution must be setteld on a written agreement, and percentage can't be changed (Of what they've told me.).
